Administration of Medication Policy

At Life Stream Australia, the safety and wellbeing of our Participants is at the heart of everything we do.
We have recently introduced a new Administration of Medication Policy to help strengthen the safety,
accuracy, and consistency of medication support across all our programs.
This ensures every Participant receives medication support that reflects best practice and genuine care.

The updated policy explains the different ways medication may be given, along with the level of direction
our staff need to follow depending on the medication type and the instructions provided by a doctor or specialist.

It also outlines what happens if a Participant chooses not to take their medication.
In these moments, our staff follow a calm, respectful process that supports the Participant’s choice,
keeps them safe, and ensures the refusal is recorded clearly and correctly.

To make sure medication is always handled with care, the policy describes the documents and information
that must be completed or checked — from the very first medical instructions we receive right
through to the final steps when medication is no longer needed on site.

The policy also highlights the resources and supports available to staff,
including the different ways medication is securely stored.
Storage methods vary depending on the type of medication and the level of support required,
but safety remains our priority in every situation.

Some aspects of medication support need a little extra planning, so the policy includes guidance for:
• medication taken on Leisure Holidays programs
• medication that needs refrigeration
• tablets that need to be cut into halves or quarters
• Participants who use a Webster pack

Finally, the policy sets out a clear, step‑by‑step process for administering medication,
helping our staff provide safe, consistent support across all Life Stream Australia locations.

These changes represent an important step in ensuring our practices meet legislative requirements
and uphold the highest standards of care.
Above all, they reinforce our commitment to delivering safe, high‑quality support for every Participant
across every Life Stream Australia location and program.

INFORMATION COLLECTION AND STORAGE POLICY

To ensure we can provide the best possible supports, it is important for Life Stream Australia
to gather and maintain some information about our Participants, Volunteers and Staff.  

In the modern world, Life Stream Australia has established cloud-based storage for all information,
either through our internal systems or contracted platforms. 
For older information, the organisation contracts Iron Mountain Secure Data Facilities
to ensure paper copies of old information is stored but accessible using their online platform.

The organisation understands the importance of data security and maintains strict access protocols
that limit the sharing of information to only those who need it.  Access to such data is removed when this changes. 
The organisation has strict protocols about the storage information on personal devices (a big no no!),
and in the event a staff member resigns, their access is either removed immediately,
or their account monitored throughout their notice period.

Life Stream Australia is proud of the multi-level security offered to all data storage
and is confident the organisation can provide access to information swiftly,
while also ensuring material is secure.
